New York Harbor in Winter
by Ted Scull
Some years see ice and snow, more often than others, and their presence on the surface of the Upper Bay or North (Hudson) River, and on ships and docks, makes for some wonderful winter scenes. Here we present several sets of photos taken on different winter dates in years past, starting with images of Cunard’s QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 which was a welcome winter visitor in early January when she sailed from the icy harbor bound for an around the world cruise or arrived back ice-coated after the December crossing. More readily accessible was the Staten Island Ferry that runs an around-the-clock schedule every day of the year, rarely suspending service. Two sets of photos, taken on two different days a couple of decades ago, show the boats in winter conditions sailing through the ice, decks covered with snow, and crews shoveling the white stuff over the side. In more recent years, New York is receiving less snow, but still experiences periods of cold weather that produces icy conditions in the harbor ideal for winter-time photography.
