With increasingly large numbers of Europeans desiring passage to Canada and the United States in the 19th century, many shipping lines built larger and faster ships to meet the demands right up to World War I. It was these souls who sailed in steerage that filled these ships and generated the profits for the shipping lines rather than those in first class. At our November/December membership meeting, author and PONY Branch past-chairman Ted Scull discussed how this important trans-Atlantic trade fluctuated, and how new ships were built to accommodate it into the 1960s.
