CARNIVAL RADIANCE 4-Nt Cruise From Long Beach, CA, Plus QUEEN MARY Pre-Cruise Activities
November 8 - November 15
During the weekend of November 8-10, 2024, 17 PONY Branch members joined the Steamship Historical Society of America for their annual meeting, this year held at the QUEEN MARY Hotel in Long Beach, CA. In addition to exploring the fabled ocean liner, attendees had the opportunity to view the ocean liner memorabilia collection of Dr. Nelson Arnstein at his home in Long Beach, attend presentations on the SS ROTTERDAM (V) and the SSHSA archives and collections, and attend a cocktail reception and gala dinner on Saturday evening featuring a presentation by Peter Knego on Maritime Modernism Afloat. On Sunday, attendees were welcomed by Peter at his home in Oceanside for lunch and a tour of his extensive museum-quality collection of mid-century ocean liner furnishings and artwork, acquired during numerous trips to ship breakers around the world.
On Monday, 41 SSHSA and WSS-PONY Branch members, family and friends embarked on a four-night cruise out of Long Beach aboard CARNIVAL RADIANCE (formerly the CARNIVAL VICTORY). Although a port call at Catalina Island was cancelled due to rough seas, members did not lack for fun activities, including a port call at Ensenada, Mexico; a visit with Captain Eduardo Ferrone, the ship’s Master, on the bridge of the RADIANCE; a presentation on passenger-ship builder’s plates by Captain Terry Tilton, U.S.N. (Ret); and two cocktail receptions hosted by SSHSA and Carnival. Our thanks to the SSHSA, the QUEEN MARY Hotel, and the crew of the CARNIVAL RADIANCE for a very enjoyable week in the company of fellow ship enthusiasts.
