SUMMARY:TOWING THE SS UNITED STATES TO MOBILE\, ALABAMA ***ENCORE PRESENTATION***Presented by Capt. Mike Vinik
DESCRIPTION:Captain Mike Vinik\, owner of the New Jersey-based tugboat company\, Vinik Marine\, captained the tugboat VINIK NO.6 on a 10-day journey from Philadelphia\, PA\, down the east coast and around the coast of Florida to safely deliver the historic vessel SS UNITED STATES to its new temporary home in Mobile\, Alabama. The WSS-PONY Branch is pleased to welcome Captain Vinik as he provides his firsthand account of the historic 1\,855-mile trip with his dedicated crew of seven using the now famous VINIK NO.6\, and a half mile long 2¼-in diameter steel cable. From their departure on February 19\, 2025 until their arrival on March 3\, 2025\, the tow continued 24/7 and included a spate of bad weather conditions off Cape Hatteras\, North Carolina. \nCaptain Vinik attended the Marine Academy of Science and Technology in New Jersey and later graduated from the New York Maritime College at Fort Schuyler in 2003. Just over a year later\, he took a bold step by purchasing his first tugboat that was in “pretty bad shape [and then] spent 10 months getting it back up and running again.” Mike has never looked back. \nIf you missed Captain Vinik’s presentation at our April virtual membership meeting\, or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for this encore showing on Saturday\, June 14\, 2025. \n(Photo: Capt. SUMMARY:GUIDED TOUR OF THE MARITIME CITY EXHIBIT AT THE SOUTH STREET SEAPORT MUSEUM
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 21\, 2025\, twenty-five PONY Branch members and guests enjoyed a private tour of the South Street Seaport Museum’s new exhibition\, Maritime City\, in the historic 1868 A.A. Thomson & Co. warehouse. Martina Caruso\, the Museum’s Director of Collections and Exhibitions\, led the tour of the extensive three-floor exhibition\, which features 540 objects from the museum’s collections and archives deliberately-selected to underscore how New York City’s identity as a global capital of culture and finance is rooted in its origins as a seaport. A highlight for many was the newly restored\, 22-foot-long builder model of RMS QUEEN MARY that was displayed for decades in the ticketing hall of the Cunard Building at 25 Broadway. After the tour\, many of those attending enjoyed a waterside lunch at the Cobble Fish restaurant on nearby Pier 16. \n(Photo: Denise Dacey)

SUMMARY:FAREWELL MARCO POLO Presented by David Trevor-Jones
DESCRIPTION:Cruise & Maritime Voyages fell victim to the pandemic in June 2020.  Its eclectic fleet of classic cruise ships including the venerable MARCO POLO\, formerly the Soviet ALEXANDER PUSHKIN\, was arrested and later auctioned by the UK Admiralty Marshall.  MARCO POLO languished in lay-up at Avonmouth\, the port of Bristol\, until November that year.  David Trevor-Jones gained privileged access and was the last ship enthusiast/photographer allowed on board and was also on the dockside to watch her sail.  This is his story of how that happened and what he saw. \nIn Spring 1966 David Trevor-Jones was with his father on an excursion boat trip round Southampton Docks at the peak of the British seamen’s strike. A sudden squall drove the boat to seek shelter in the lee of the QUEEN MARY. David reached out and plucked a flake of paint from the liner’s hull. He was hooked as a ship-enthusiast for life! A family cruise on the new MIKHAIL LERMONTOV in 1973 sparked his fascination with the Soviet “author” liners. Now Dorset WSS Vice-Chairperson and program organizer of the Ocean Liner Society\, David has written about and lectured on the Soviet class of “author” ships and their key role in the UK cruise market. \n(Image: David Trevor-Jones)
