SUMMARY:TOWING THE SS UNITED STATES TO MOBILE\, ALABAMA Presented by Capt. Mike Vinik
DESCRIPTION:Captain Mike Vinik\, owner of the New Jersey-based tugboat company\, Vinik Marine\, captained the tugboat VINIK NO.6 on a 10-day journey from Philadelphia\, PA\, down the east coast and around the coast of Florida to safely deliver the historic vessel SS UNITED STATES to its new temporary home in Mobile\, Alabama. The WSS-PONY Branch is pleased to welcome Captain Vinik as he provides his firsthand account of the historic 1\,855-mile trip with his dedicated crew of seven using the now famous VINIK NO.6\, and a half mile long 2¼-in diameter steel cable. From their departure on February 19\, 2025 until their arrival on March 3\, 2025\, the tow continued 24/7 and included a spate of bad weather conditions off Cape Hatteras\, North Carolina. \nCaptain Vinik attended the Marine Academy of Science and Technology in New Jersey and later graduated from the New York Maritime College at Fort Schuyler in 2003. Just over a year later\, he took a bold step by purchasing his first tugboat that was in “pretty bad shape [and then] spent 10 months getting it back up and running again.” Mike has never looked back. \n(Photo: Capt. SUMMARY:GRAND & GLORIOUS: THE GREAT CUNARD LINE ***ENCORE PRESENTATION*** Presented by Bill Miller
DESCRIPTION:On its 185th anniversary\, former PONY Branch chairman Bill Miller will take us on a grand review of the Cunard Line\, quite possibly the most famous shipping company on all the seas. Few shipping lines have had the great history to match Cunard. Bill will begin just after the Second World War as Cunarders\, including the legendary QUEEN ELIZABETH and QUEEN MARY\, return from strenuous war duties\, and the Company assembles the biggest passenger ship fleet on the North Atlantic. They would have 14 liners at one point and carry as much as a quarter of all trans-ocean passengers. Bill will review the fleet\, revive the glamor and style of crossings\, from film stars to steamer trunks\, and take us from the likes of beloved MAURETANIA and CARONIA to the current QUEEN MARY 2 and the new QUEEN ANNE. \nThe whistles are sounding — all aboard on Cunard! \nCalled “Mr. Ocean Liner”\, William Miller is considered an international authority on the subjects of ocean liners and cruise ships. He has written over 100 books on the subject. Bill\, a world traveler with hundreds of sea voyages\, is a much sought-after presenter and blogger. He is also a career educator. Bill is a founding member of the WSS-PONY Branch. Bill was named Outstanding American Maritime Scholar in 1994 and received the U.S. Maritime Preservation Award and the Ocean Liner Council’s Silver Riband Award in 2004. Additionally\, Bill was the 2017 recipient of SSHSA’s Samuel Ward Stanton Award for Lifetime Achievement. \nIf you missed Bill’s presentation at our February virtual membership meeting\, or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for this encore showing on Saturday\, April 12\, 2025. \n(Photo: Bill Miller collection)
