SUMMARY:WHEN THE EAST WENT WEST ***ENCORE SHOWING*** Presented by William Roka
DESCRIPTION:As the momentum of immigration to the United States shifted from Western and Northern Europe to Eastern Europe at the end of the 19th century\, the business environment of moving so many new migrants also evolved. At our July membership meeting\, historian William Roka explored how the great transatlantic corporate juggernauts\, Cunard and Hamburg America Line\, pursued various transit models to stretch their tendrils into Eastern Europe. He also discussed some of the ships plying the waters between East and West\, including Cunard’s CARPATHIA and Austro Americana’s MARTHA WASHINGTON (pictured).\n \nIf you missed William’s informative presentation in July or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for the encore showing on Saturday\, September 16th. \n(Image: Wikipedia)

SUMMARY:EXPLORING THE QUARANTINE ISLANDS Presented by Pat Salmon
DESCRIPTION:After the famous burning of the Quarantine Hospital at Tompkinsville\, Staten Island on September 1 and 2\, 1858\, something had to be done to accommodate the thousands of arriving immigrants with contagious diseases. The historic Quarantine Islands\, Hoffman and Swinburne\, played a key role in our immigration history for decades. They were the first and sometimes the only stop for immigrants entering the United States. \nOn Sunday\, September 24\, 2023\, WSS-PONY Branch members and friends enjoyed a presentation on the Quarantine Islands of New York by historian Pat Salmon at the National Lighthouse Museum on Staten Island. Following the program refreshments were served and those attending in-person had an opportunity to tour the museum. A planned post-meeting boat cruise to the Quarantine Islands and circumnavigation of Staten Island unfortunately had to be cancelled as a required Coast Guard inspection of the vessel could not be scheduled in time. \n(Image: www.nytimes.com)
