SUMMARY:A LOVE FOR LINERS: THE VINCENT M. LOVE COLLECTION AT SSHSA Presented by Astrid Drew\, SSHSA Archivist
DESCRIPTION:At our May membership meeting the PONY Branch welcomed Astrid Drew who presented a visual program on the Vincent M. Love Collection\, currently on loan to the Steamship Historical Society of America (SSHSA). Astrid is the archivist at the SSHSA\, an independent non-profit focused on the history of engine powered vessels. In this presentation\, we learned about SSHSA’s dynamic collections\, with a special focus on the Vincent M. Love Collection. Mr. Love was a long-time SSHSA member and maritime enthusiast who worked for several shipping companies such as United States Lines. He had a particular interest in ocean liners and White Star Line’s TITANIC\, and collected widely. His collections include beautiful lithographs and posters\, as well as TITANIC artifacts such as passenger lists\, a first-class deck plan\, and a unique card catalog of passengers and crew. Astrid also provided an overview of the vast SSHSA collections as well as her role as archivist. The SSHSA collections comprise hundreds of thousands of images\, artifacts\, ephemera\, memorabilia\, and artwork\, as well as a maritime reference library located at the Ship History Center in Warwick\, RI. \nAs archivist for the Steamship Historical Society of America\, Astrid Drew manages and organizes collections and digital media\, and assists the public in learning more about the history of engine-powered vessels. She holds a Masters of Library and Information Science\, with a focus in archives and preservation\, from Simmons College. \n(Image: Vincent M. Love Collection – SSHSA Virtual Museum)

SUMMARY:TITANIC\, THE EXHIBITION
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nDuring the fall of 2022\, “Titanic\, The Exhibition” arrived in NYC after a run in London. On May 7\, 2023\, members and guests attending our May membership meeting were invited to view this new exhibit created by the Spanish Company Musealia with contributions by TITANIC historian Claes-Göran Wetterholm. The exhibition\, a short 15-minute walk from the meeting location\, was a natural segue from the evening’s program on maritime collections with specific emphasis on TITANIC and White Star related items. The exhibition featured over 200 original objects from TITANIC and her sisters\, in addition to life-size recreations of the ship’s interiors\, and photographs\, handwritten letters\, wayward keepsakes\, and other personal belongings telling countless stories about the fates and heroic deeds on board. A narrated audio guide included sound effects\, music and testimonies from TITANIC passengers and crew. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:MAIDEN VOYAGE OF THE LORD OF THE HIGHLANDS ***ENCORE SHOWING*** Presented by Pat Dacey
DESCRIPTION:At our March 2023 membership meeting at the National Opera Center in Manhattan\, PONY Branch Vice-Chairman Pat Dacey presented a program on the maiden voyage of Hebridean Island Cruises’ LORD OF THE HIGHLANDS. The voyage from the Scottish resort town of Oban to Kyle of Lochalsh included the Caledonian Canal which opened in 1822 connecting the Scottish east coast at Inverness with the west coast at Corpach and was designed by the noted Scottish engineer Thomas Telford. Pat explored the history\, design and experience of sailing on this unique vessel which was originally a Turkish ferry that underwent a three-year conversion into a luxury river cruise ship. \nIf you missed Pat’s presentation in March or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for the encore showing on Saturday\, May 20th. \n(Photo: hebridean.co.uk)
