SUMMARY:NORTH BY NORTH STARPresented by Pat Dacey
DESCRIPTION:Join PONY Branch Chairman Pat Dacey on a photographic journey north from Longyearbyen\, Norway to Moffen Island\, crossing 80 degrees North and back onboard the historic 1956-built M/S NORDSTJERNEN (The North Star). The classic NORDSTJERNEN previously sailed the Norwegian Coastal Express Service and Svalbard Express service to Spitsbergen until 1994\, and then cruised occasionally and served as a replacement vessel for Hurtigruten until 2012 when she was purchased by Vestland Classic. Since 2012 NORDSTJERNEN has been sailing exclusively in the Arctic Ocean\, once again carrying her former Bergen Line funnel livery. \nNORDSTJERNEN is an outstanding example of 1950’s ship design\, with many technical and design features reaching back to the 1930s. In 2012 the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage designated NORDSTJERNEN as fully protected under their authority for the protection of historical monuments. \n“Connect with your inner explorer” as you admire the classic décor\, public rooms\, working areas and deck space as the ship heads north on an August 2022 voyage\, sailing to numerous fjords and making expedition landings\, while observing glaciers\, polar bears\, walruses\, and many other examples of Arctic wildlife. \nFor those unable to attend the meeting in-person\, Pat’s presentation will be live-streamed via Zoom.\n \nIn accordance with New York City and National Opera Center protocols\, mask wearing will be optional for those attending this event in-person. \n(Pat Dacey photo)

SUMMARY:HARBOR CRUISE TO VIEW MS ROTTERDAM (VII)
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 27\, 2022\, 17 members of the PONY Branch and the Steamship Historical Society of America embarked on Sea Scout Ship 228’s historic 1953 Higgins T-Boat\, SEA DART II\, to escort Holland America Line’s Pinnacle-class MS ROTTERDAM (VII) on her maiden departure from New York as she continued her 15-day transatlantic voyage honoring the maiden voyage of ROTTERDAM (I) in 1872. Departing from the National Lighthouse Museum on Staten Island under sunny skies\, we sailed past the Staten Island Ferry maintenance facility and the Ollis-class ferry DOROTHY DAY\, newly delivered from the builders in Florida. After paying a visit to the Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne\, NJ\, to view Royal Caribbean’s Voyager-class ADVENTURE OF THE SEAS\, we continued up the Hudson (North) River\, arriving off the Manhattan Cruise Terminal as the MS ROTTERDAM was leaving her berth. The SEA DART II then escorted her to the Statue of Liberty where HAL’s flagship hove to and used her azipods and thrusters to rotate in place several times to provide passengers on both sides of the ship a view of the statue at sunset. As night fell\, we headed back to Staten Island as MS ROTTERDAM set course for the Verrazzano Narrows and the open ocean en route to Fort Lauderdale\, FL. \n(Photo: Stuart Gewirtzman)

SUMMARY:THE HISTORY OF THE STATEN ISLAND FERRY***ENCORE SHOWING***Presented by Patricia M. Salmon
DESCRIPTION:Most people do not realize that ferries to and from Staten Island have existed since the time the indigenous Lenape tribe inhabited what is now New York City. As the island evolved and its transportation system became more elaborate\, the ferries that operated also changed. This program\, presented by Patricia M. Salmon\, covered more than 400 years of Staten Island ferry service\, including the entrepreneurs involved\, the ferryboats themselves\, and the landings that existed all around what was once an isolated island. \nPatricia M. Salmon retired as Curator of History at the Staten Island Museum in 2012 and has been a Staten Island resident for almost fifty years. Ms. Salmon has authored the books Realms of History: The Cemeteries of Staten Island\, The Staten Island Ferry: A History\, Murder & Mayhem on Staten Island and Staten Island Slayings: Murderers and Mysteries of the Forgotten Borough. \nThis encore showing featured a recording of Pat’s program originally presented on September 30th. \n(Image courtesy of Patricia M.
