SUMMARY:TORN CASTLE - THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE UNION-CASTLE LINE FLAGSHIP RMS WINDSOR CASTLEPresented by Peter Knego
DESCRIPTION:At our May meeting\, the PONY Branch welcomed Peter Knego via Zoom from California. Peter presented “Torn Castle\,” the title feature on his latest DVD that documents the life and times of the Union-Castle Line flagship\, the 1960-built RMS WINDSOR CASTLE. The hour-long documentary includes vintage footage of her building\, launch\, maiden voyage and final departure from Cape Town\, South Africa\, interwoven with Peter’s rare footage of the laid-up ship in Greece as the MARGARITA L. Finally\, we visited her on the beach in India\, where the viewer literally walked through the ship with Peter during the demolition process. \n(Image: Peter Knego collection)

SUMMARY:OCEAN LINERS: GLAMOUR\, SPEED AND STYLE -- THE V & A AND PEABODY ESSEX MUSEUM EXHIBIT ***ENCORE SHOWING*** Presented by Stephen Lash
DESCRIPTION:At our April meeting\, PONY Branch members and guests were treated to the observations of a noted collector of ocean liner memorabilia — Stephen Lash\, Chairman Emeritus of the venerable auction house Christie’s. Stephen originated the idea for an international exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London\, and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem\, Massachusetts\, where portions of the Lash collection remain on view documenting that today’s interest  in ocean liners goes beyond nostalgia and extends to art\, architecture and social history. \nIf you missed Stephen’s entertaining presentation in April\, or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for an encore showing on Saturday May 15th. \n(This encore presentation will be a recording of the live program presented on April 30th.) \n(Image: Stephen Lash collection)

SUMMARY:FRED & GINGER AT SEA: ART DECO OCEAN LINERS ***ENCORE SHOWING***Presented by Bill Miller
DESCRIPTION:On March 26th\, the WSS – PONY Branch welcomed our own Bill Miller who presented “Fred & Ginger at Sea: Art Deco Ocean Liners.” The 1930s was a glamorous age\, a progressive age and a busy age. New ocean liners were continuously created for routes around the world:  North Atlantic\, South America\, Africa\, even to far-off colonies. It was also the age of glamour\, of Art Deco on the high seas. Some called it “Hollywood gone to sea”! And it was also the era of some of the biggest\, fastest and most luxurious liners – such as the REX\, NORMANDIE and QUEEN MARY.  \nBill Miller\, “Mr. Ocean Liner\,” has written numerous maritime books\, including one about passenger ships of the Thirties. At our March membership meeting\, Bill took us on a voyage\, a virtual visual voyage spanning the decade from 1930 to 1940\, featuring some of the world’s greatest and most distinctive and luxurious liners of all time. \nIf you missed Bill’s entertaining presentation in March\, or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for an encore showing on Saturday April 17th. \n(This encore presentation will be a recording of the live program presented on March 26th.) \n(Image: Bill Miller collection)

SUMMARY:PASSAGE TO PAPUA: 10 DAYS ACROSS SOUTHEAST ASIA BY SEAPresented by Tom Rinaldi
DESCRIPTION:The Indonesian State Shipping system — Pelni\, as it is known to its passengers — is one of the world’s very last operators of passenger liners in the traditional sense. In terms of distance covered and passengers carried\, it has no equal among providers of point-to-point waterborne transport today\, with a formidable fleet of nearly 30 vessels sailing scheduled routes that last a week or more from end to end. In late 2019\, former PONY Branch board member Tom Rinaldi set out to book passage by Pelni from Singapore to Papua\, a trip that would cover some 3\,000 miles in ten days aboard two vessels. But with the company’s services declining in recent years as low-cost airlines capture an ever-greater share of its traffic\, the challenge was to get there before it was too late. In our first program of 2021\, Tom offered an introduction to this living vestige of the world’s vanished liner services\, and related how he fared getting from there to here. \n(Tom Rinaldi photos)

SUMMARY:SHIPS OF STATE\, PACIFIC STYLE: The PRESIDENT JACKSON-CLASS OF 1940Presented by Wayne Yanda
DESCRIPTION:Eighty years ago\, November 1940 marked the debut of the PRESIDENT JACKSON\, the first of seven round-the-world passenger-cargo liners designed to help American President Lines rise from the ashes of the Dollar Line. The JACKSON-class was also tasked with stemming the insurgence of the Japanese Merchant Marine\, represented by the NYK Line and OSK Line. \nWayne Yanda described the trans-Pacific rivalry of the United States and Japan during the interwar years\, and how it led to the creation of the PRESIDENT JACKSON-class of 1940. He described the nationwide mural competition\, fraught with conflict\, held to decorate these little liners\, and shared rarely seen images of ships from both sides of the Pacific. And Wayne made the case for why the PRESIDENT JACKSON-class\, weighing in at just 9\,500 gross tons\, can claim the moniker “ship of state.” \nA few years ago\, Wayne Yanda took his interest in ocean liners and the arts and launched the website muralsonthehighseas.com\, dedicated to the artworks created for American-built passenger ships. Every other Monday\, on the website’s Facebook page\, he publishes a Mural Monday\, a brief look at an artist’s life and their work for an American liner. He currently works at the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa\, Iowa. \n(Image: Wayne Yanda Collection/National Archives)

SUMMARY:ICON OF IDENTITY:THE 'ILE DE FRANCE' ON THE WORLD STAGEPresented by Christian Roden
DESCRIPTION:The ILE DE FRANCE was recognized around the world as an extension of French society. Conceived as a way of proclaiming the nation’s political influence and cultural achievement through her groundbreaking Art Deco interiors\, over the course of her thirty-two year career the vessel found herself playing the role of trendsetter\, cinema muse\, troopship\, and rescue vessel. Historian Christian Roden shared long-forgotten stories of the ILE DE FRANCE uncovered at the Association French Line archives. \nChristian is an independent maritime historian\, curator\, and author\, specializing in the French\, Swedish\, and American merchant marine. He has published in the Winterthur Portfolio and Magazine of the Decorative Arts Trust\, and has guest curated exhibitions at the American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia and the Winterthur Museum\, Garden & Library in Wilmington\, Delaware. He holds an MA from the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture\, and a BA in Art History and English from Washington and Lee University\, and was a 2011-2012 Fulbright Research Fellow at L’Association French Lines in Le Havre\, France. Christian currently works as the Assistant Director of Prospect Research for the University of Pennsylvania Libraries\, and has previously held positions at the Decorative Arts Trust\, SS United States Conservancy\, and the Delaware County District Library in Ohio. SUMMARY:ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE LINE: 50 YEARS OF INNOVATIONPresented by Allan Jordan
DESCRIPTION:In November 2020\, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line\, one of the most iconic names in the cruise industry\, will mark the 50th anniversary of the inaugural voyage of SONG OF NORWAY. At roughly 18\,400 gross tons and 552 feet\, this ship would now be considered diminutive compared to the Freedom-Class\, Oasis-Class and Quantum-Class successors in the Royal Caribbean fleet.  With an eye-catching lounge cantilevered from its funnel\, Royal Caribbean’s first ship was a harbinger of innovations to come in both design and passenger amenities. \nThroughout its first fifty years\, Royal Caribbean has built some of the largest passenger ships afloat. It has introduced rock walls\, aqua theaters\, boxing rings\, bungee trampolines\, surfing simulators\, skating rinks\, and zip lines into the cruise experience.  Not into rock-climbing or sky diving? How about an observatory platform rising more than 300 feet above the sea?  Conceived by an entrepreneur who envisioned a new style of passenger experience at sea\, Royal Caribbean has continued to push the design envelope with large atriums\, multi-deck interior promenades and neighborhoods. \nCruise historian and maritime journalist Allan Jordan described the evolution of Royal Caribbean’s cruise ships from SONG OF NORWAY to its first mega ship\, SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS\, and finally to today’s largest cruise ship SYMPHONY OF THE SEAS.  He entertained us along the way with stories about the company and its history. \n(Royal Caribbean photos)

SUMMARY:GETTING THERE - A TRAVEL ADVENTURE:FROM NEW YORK'S PIER 86 TO YALTA'S MARITIME STATION AND INTO THE SOVIET UNIONPresented by Ted Scull
DESCRIPTION:The PONY Branch hosted a summertime membership meeting via Zoom featuring a program by Past Chairman Ted Scull. We joined Ted in August 1963 as he set out on an elaborate five-week itinerary\, traveling by ship\, train\, and riverboat from New York to Yalta on the Black Sea\, and then onto the Volga and Don rivers and visits to Sochi\, Moscow and several other Russian cities. \nTed’s journey began with a transatlantic crossing on Hamburg-Atlantic Line’s HANSEATIC\, built in 1930 for Canadian Pacific as the EMPRESS OF JAPAN. After briefly visiting England\, he boarded The Night Ferry\, a once famous London to Paris sleeper train\, and continued eastward on the Orient Express to Prague\, then onto Vienna. Here he joined two friends for a Danube River journey aboard a Russian riverboat built by the Austrians as war reparations and bound for a Russian port near the mouth of the Danube. We saw images of Soviet-era shipping and Ted’s port calls in Czechoslovakia\, Hungary\, Yugoslavia\, Romania and Bulgaria. Transferring to a connecting Russian coastal ship for Yalta\, Ted then began three weeks in the USSR traveling with friends\, a small Intourist group\, and on his own. This portion of the program focused on the maritime scenes encountered on the Black Sea and the Volga and Don rivers. \nAll attending enjoyed a truly adventurous journey by land and water\, and a dose of intrigue\, during the early days of Soviet tourism. \n(Photos: Ted Scull)

SUMMARY:SEARCHING FOR ADVENTURE ON LAND & SEAPresented by Tom Rinaldi and Ted Scull
DESCRIPTION:For our June program (our first virtual meeting via Zoom)\, long-time members Tom Rinaldi and Ted Scull each presented trips that illustrate their passion for travel—with a dose of adventure—by sea\, river and rail to interesting destinations around the globe. The meeting included some discussion between Tom and Ted about creating unusual itineraries. \nFirst\, we joined Ted on his travels around East Africa by “The Lunatic Express” and other trains\, and aboard a WWI-era coal-burning steamer on a partial four-day circumnavigation of Lake Victoria. Tom then revisited two subjects that reflect his own evolving ideas about travel: first\, a series of Mediterranean ferry crossings made while living in Italy in 2004\, and second\, a three-week trip across East Asia by sea and rail in the spring of 2011. This latter trip featured visits to preserved passenger ships along the way\, several of which—including the Italian Line’s motorship Augustus—have since vanished. Tom discussed how these two journeys figure into a sequence of travels over a span of 15 years\, and how the success of each trip set the stage for progressively more ambitious itineraries in succession. \n(Photos: Ted Scull & Tom Rinaldi)

SUMMARY:MARITIME PHOTOGRAPHYPresented by Capt. Jonathan Atkin
DESCRIPTION:The PONY Branch welcomed Captain Jonathan Atkin who specializes in meticulously choreographed aerial photography for the maritime industry. Early in his career he had numerous photos published in the Washington Post\, and later produced over 850 assignments for the Arts/Leisure and Travel sections of The New York Times. His first aerial assignment for The Times was photographing Royal Caribbean’s abrupt departure from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal for Bayonne\, NJ. He soon became the “go-to photographer” for the Travel section anytime a new cruise ship had its debut. \nJonathan later turned to corporate aerial maritime photography for Cunard\, Carnival\, Royal Caribbean\, numerous cargo companies and the workboat community. His aerial photography relies on robust helicopters supplemented by a fleet of professional drones to create immersive images for maritime clients. \nJonathan has been photographing Carnival Corporation ships for decades\, beginning with a Bermuda sailing aboard the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 for The New York Times\, creating his first aerial photos of that vessel with an industrial kite. Flying from the helo deck on Friday the 13th while in the Bermuda Triangle\, he managed to fracture his wrist in the effort. In NY Harbor\, his first “real” aerial of the QE2 was achieved on a foggy morning by hanging from a parasail backwards\, a technique he perfected for Holland America Line at Half Moon Cay. In 2003\, traveling to St. Nazaire\, he photographed the QUEEN MARY 2 under construction\, beginning a love affair with that beautiful ship. In Florida\, at the debut of CARNIVAL GLORY\, former Carnival President\, Bob Dickenson quipped\, “It isn’t an inaugural if Jonathan isn’t here.”

SUMMARY:FLOATING RIVIERAS: THE GREAT ITALIAN LINEPresented by Bill Miller
DESCRIPTION:The great Italian Line with its fine fleet of passenger liners will sail once more. Created in 1932\, but gone from the seas since the mid-1970s\, the Italian liners were known for their glorious warm-weather\, mid-Atlantic crossings — to Genoa and Naples\, to Venice and Trieste\, and of course to many other Mediterranean ports. And even if Sophia Loren won’t be joining us\, Bill’s program will make it seem like yesteryear’s crossings on those fine ships. The cast will include the likes of the CONTE BIANCAMANO\, VULCANIA\, ROMA\, REX\, CONTE DI SAVOIA\, ANDREA DORIA\, LEONARDO DA VINCI and MICHELANGELO. \nLong-time member Bill Miller will play the part of guest speaker/commandante–recalling those grand Italian Liners.

SUMMARY:WE WANT YOU AS A PASSENGERPresented by Ted Scull
DESCRIPTION:Ocean liner travel became fashionable at end of the 19th century\, and the steamship lines went all out promoting their services\, hiring artists to create images of speed\, reliability\, safety\, comfort\, luxury\, fun\, and fantasy in print advertising and fetching images of poster art. Author and former PONY Branch Chairman Ted Scull showed us some of the evocative posters in his collection\, a dozen or so that decorate the walls of his apartment\, and others that he has photographed over the years. Also shown were images of ocean liner memorabilia including enticing brochures\, striking menus with some strange food selections\, detailed deck plans\, ship models\, and other items from the recent Peabody Essex ocean liner exhibition “Glamour\, Speed and Style” in Salem\, Massachusetts\, which later transferred to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and then to the V & A’s new annex in Dundee\, Scotland.

SUMMARY:THE "R" CLASS SHIPS - A CLASS OF THEIR OWNPresented by Pat Dacey & Bob Allen
DESCRIPTION:Renaissance Cruises was founded in 1989\, and shortly thereafter had eight small 100-passenger ships in their fleet. Quickly outgrowing these ships and operating profitably\, Renaissance ordered eight new identical cruise ships\, the “R” class\, which were all delivered between 1998 and 2001. In 2001\, Renaissance Cruises collapsed under increasing financial debt and ceased operations. Soon thereafter all of their ships were either sold or chartered out. All eight ships are still in active service with seven currently sailing as the foundation for both Oceania and Azamara Cruises. In addition to their history with Renaissance\, Pat Dacey and Bob Allen explored how each ship shaped the cruise industry by quickly becoming passenger favorites for their boutique atmosphere and classical styling. They then focused on the first of the class\, R ONE\, now Oceania Cruises’ INSIGNIA\, taking a deck by deck photo tour of her current configuration followed by a photo essay as seen through the eyes of the World Ship Society – Port of New York Branch members on our recent cruise to Bermuda. \nPat Dacey is the current Chairman and Bob Allen is the current Vice Chairman of the World Ship Society – Port of New York Branch. \n(Photo credit: Mario De Stefano)

SUMMARY:THE SANDY HOOK PILOTSPresented by Captain William A Speiser Jr.\, Sandy Hook Pilot
DESCRIPTION:At our September membership meeting\, Captain Speiser gave a presentation on the career of a Maritime Pilot\, the role of the Maritime Pilot aboard ships in ports throughout the world\, a history of Pilotage\, and a history of the Sandy Hook Pilots who have been bringing ships into and out of the Port of New York for 325 years. Captain Speiser also discussed the training and licensing of the Sandy Hook Pilots\, the process of maneuvering today’s ships into and out of the Port\, how yesterday’s ocean liners have evolved into today’s cruise ships\, and his experiences handling unique ships such as QUEEN ELIZABETH 2\, QUEEN MARY 2\, ANTHEM OF THE SEAS\, REGAL EMPRESS\, and many more. \nCaptain William A. Speiser\, Jr. grew up on the New Jersey shore watching ships enter and depart New York Harbor from its beaches and the Passenger Ship Terminal in Manhattan. From a young age\, he sought a career in the maritime industry as an officer on ships\, which led him to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point\, New York. Upon graduation in 1994\, he began a seven-year apprenticeship with the Sandy Hook Pilots and became a Pilot in September\, 2001. He is the first Kings Point graduate to become a Sandy Hook Pilot and is the Vice President of the New Jersey Sandy Hook Pilots. \n(Captain William A. Speiser\, Jr. photos)

SUMMARY:OCEANIA CRUISES' MV INSIGNIA MARITIME ENTHUSIASTS CRUISE
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 18th\, 38 World Ship Society – PONY Branch members and friends set sail from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal aboard Oceania Cruises’ MV INSIGNIA under dramatic thunderstorm-filled skies. Once we cleared Lower New York Bay\, QUEEN MARY 2 was spotted ahead\, having departed Brooklyn the same time we sailed from Manhattan. As with most cruises\, the first night onboard was quiet\, but our group was in store for a week of virtually nonstop parties. Monday evening (after a stormy day at sea)\, we were treated to the Captain’s welcome aboard party\, as well as much calmer seas. Tuesday evening\, the PONY Branch hosted a welcome party in the Horizons Lounge on INSIGNIA’s top deck\, with sweeping views of a spectacular sunset through its full-height glass walls. Wednesday was a well-timed day off from parties\, since Thursday there were two! That afternoon\, we were invited by world-renowned maritime artist Stephen Card to join him for an afternoon cocktail party at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. Afterwards\, we headed back to the INSIGNIA for pre-dinner cocktails hosted by Virtuoso Voyages (consortium partner of our travel agent\, Travel Edge)\, again in Horizons Lounge. Friday was the Oceania Club Repeaters’ Party in the Insignia Lounge\, another chance to chat with the INSIGNIA’s captain\, officers and staff. The ship’s social hostess invited the entire World Ship Society group\, repeaters or not. Saturday we received word that there would be another cocktail hour hosted by Virtuoso Voyages – because they had forgotten to order hors’ d oeuvre for the first party! \nIf it sounds like there was no reason to drop anchor during this cruise\, that was not the case. St. George’s was our first port of call – Bermuda’s most populous city and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a delightful town\, and from INSIGNIA’s berth in the beautiful harbor we enjoyed spectacular views of turquoise waters and lush green hills dotted with lovely homes. We spent two nights in St. George’s\, then sailed to Hamilton\, Bermuda’s capital\, early the following morning. Our berthing location along Front Street was equally picturesque\, only steps away from the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club\, as well as the fine shopping\, restaurants and hotels for which Hamilton is known. After an overnight in Hamilton\, we sailed past CELEBRITY SUMMIT and NORWEGIAN ESCAPE docked at King’s Wharf. Under brilliant skies we then headed to the open Atlantic and our voyage back to New York. It was a magnificent week\, sure to be remembered by our group for years to come. \n(Mario De Stefano photo)

SUMMARY:CHANDRIS LINERS AND CRUISE SHIPS 1959–1997: FROM IMMIGRANTS TO OPULENCE AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN
DESCRIPTION:Although significantly involved in passenger shipping for less than four decades\, the family-owned Chandris Group operated a wider variety of ships and services than virtually any firm of its era\, from secondhand liners carrying immigrants from Europe to Australia and converted coastal steamers cruising the Greek islands\, to some of the newest and most luxurious cruise ships sailing from North American ports. Fifteen-year-member and current Branch Secretary Doug Newman\, whose interest in passenger ships was sparked by a childhood cruise on the then-new HORIZON\, presented an illustrated history of Chandris Group’s passenger ships\, from the parallel births of Chandris Lines in 1959 and Chandris Cruises in 1960 to the sale of Celebrity Cruises to Royal Caribbean in 1997. His program featured one-time New York regulars like AMERIKANIS\, BRITANIS\, GALILEO/MERIDIAN\, HORIZON AND ZENITH\, as well as some less familiar vessels that rarely\, if ever\, made their way to our waters. \n(Photos: Ted Scull and Doug Newman)

SUMMARY:S.S. ROTTERDAM AND OTHER DELIGHTS: SHIP SPOTTING IN NORTHERN EUROPEPresented by Tom Rinaldi
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 2018\, PONY Branch member Tom Rinaldi plotted a course across Northern Europe involving as many interesting passenger ships as could be squeezed into one week\, including the retired Holland America liner S.S. ROTTERDAM. Europe’s complex geography has sustained large-scale passenger shipping of a kind that New York harbor hasn’t seen in decades. Some of Europe’s modern ferries are larger than the transatlantic liners that once frequented Manhattan’s west side piers\, even though these ships seldom cover distances greater than a few hundred miles. Tom’s course traversed more than 2\,000 miles by rail and sea\, and included one of Europe’s longest ferry crossings\, from Germany to Finland\, and a transit of one of the world’s most heavily trafficked sea lanes\, between Finland and Sweden. Stops along the way included an overnight stay at the preserved ferry BORE (ex-KRISTINA REGINA\, 1960) before wrapping up with a long-anticipated visit to the S.S. ROTTERDAM (1959)\, now preserved as a hotel ship at her former home port in the Netherlands. \n(Photo: Tom Rinaldi)

SUMMARY:50 YEARS OF MIAMI CRUISING: GROWTH OF THE PORT OF MIAMI FROM 1968 TO 2018Presented by Allan E. Jordan
DESCRIPTION:December 1968 was a watershed moment in the history of cruising. The modern port of Miami was launched with the opening of the terminals on Dodge Island and the arrival of some of the first modern cruise ships\, including the STARWARD\, BOHEME and FLAVIA. In the years to come\, Miami would become the nucleus for start-up and established passenger ship lines\, helping to firmly establish and refine the cruise industry. \nWriter and historian Allan Jordan recalled Miami’s role in advancing the cruise industry. He highlighted moments such as the launch of the SONG OF NORWAY\, MARDI GRAS\, NORWAY and SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS and discussed older ships\, including the EMERALD SEAS and the DOLPHIN\, that would be replaced by modern resorts at sea. He also brought us right up to today’s giants such as the MSC SEASIDE and SYMPHONY OF THE SEAS. \nAllan Jordan is the author of numerous articles on the cruise industry’s history and its future as a frequent contributor to Cruise Travel magazine\, Maritime Executive and Cruise Business Review. He authored Saluting the Aloha Spirit\, which recalled the history of American Hawaii Cruises and the sister ships the INDEPENDENCE and the CONSTITUTION\, and a history of NCL. He has appeared as a guest lecturer aboard the ships of Royal Viking\, Crystal\, Princess\, and Oceania. \n(Photo credit: PortMiami)

SUMMARY:FRED OLSEN LINESPresented by Karl Zimmermann
DESCRIPTION:Fred Olsen Cruise Lines\, today among the premier operators of heritage passenger ships\, has deep roots that stretch all the way back to 1848\, when the company was founded by Fredrik Christian Olsen—the first “Fred.”—and his two brothers. Over the decades the company grew and diversified widely\, while always operating passenger vessels. The current fleet of the UK-based\, Norwegian-owned cruise line numbers four: the BRAEMAR (built in 1993 as the CROWN DYNASTY)\, the BALMORAL (built in 1988 as the CROWN ODYSSEY)\, the BOUDICCA (built in 1973 as the ROYAL VIKING SKY)\, and the BLACK WATCH (built in 1972 as the ROYAL VIKING STAR). All four have been stretched. Of the Royal Viking sisters\, the BLACK WATCH has been the less altered overall. \nIn July 2018\, PONY members Karl and Laurel Zimmermann sailed on the BLACK WATCH from Liverpool on a five-night “Scottish Lochs\, Highlands and Islands” cruise\, which was highlighted in Karl’s presentation\, after some Fred. Olsen history. Karl is a travel writer who for a half-century has focused on trains and ships; his stories and pictures have appeared in numerous magazines and in the travel sections of newspapers across the country— including the Los Angeles Times\, where he currently is often featured. \n(Photo: Karl Zimmermann)
