SUMMARY:A PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF P&O CRUISES Presented by Chris Frame
DESCRIPTION:2025 is a year of change for P&O Cruises\, with its long-established Australian brand closing ending a long line of P&O voyages to the Southern Hemisphere. But where did it all start? P&O Cruises’ heritage can be traced back to the dawn of passenger shipping when Arthur Anderson and Brodie McGhie Willcox formed a shipping company to service the Iberian Peninsula. From the dawn of steam engines to service in two world wars\, to becoming a leading cruise line\, we will take a fascinating look back at the heritage of P&O. \nChris Frame is an internationally renowned Australian maritime history author who has been fascinated by ocean liners since his first voyage on Cunard’s QE2 as a boy\, and since 2008 Chris has been a regular lecturer aboard Cunard’s ships. He has published 18 maritime history books alongside co-author Rachelle Cross. Today Chris is host of the popular YouTube channel “Cruise News and Ship History” which has attracted over 12 million video views. Chris is a regular maritime history commentator for documentaries and news organizations worldwide\, including ABC\, CNN\, BBC\, and Sky News. \nPlease note that this month our virtual membership meeting will take place on a Thursday evening. \n(Image: Chris Frame)

SUMMARY:SHIP SPOTTING HARBOR CRUISE WITH LUNCH
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 20\, 2025\, 14 PONY Branch members and guests embarked on Sea Scout Ship 228’s historic 1953 Higgins T-Boat\, SEA DART II\, to view four cruise ships in port that day. Departing from the National Lighthouse Museum on Staten Island under sunny skies\, we first headed to the Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne\, NJ\, to view CELEBRITY SILHOUETTE before continuing up the Hudson (North) River to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal where NORWEGIAN GETAWAY and VIKING NEPTUNE were berthed. Next stop was the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal for a close look at MSC MERAVIGLIA as she set sail for the Bahamas. We were then treated to a view of the GETAWAY AND SILHOUETTE\, both Bermuda-bound\, passing each other sailing in opposite directions as the NCL ship headed out to sea while the Celebrity ship headed upriver to give guests a view of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline. Numerous ferries and harbor craft added to the spectacle of a busy day in New York harbor. \n(Photo: Stuart Gewirtzman)

SUMMARY:THE STORIED LIFE AND TIMES OF THE SEA CLOUD ***ENCORE PRESENTATION*** Presented by Peter Knego
DESCRIPTION:In Peter Knego’s premier SEA CLOUD presentation\, Peter will recall the career of the legendary ship\, which was built as Marjorie Merriweather-Post and E.F. Hutton’s private yacht HUSSAR V in 1931.  The SEA CLOUD went on to serve in World War II.  Following\, the SEA CLOUD became the state yacht for the Dominican Republic Dictator and his playboy son.  She later fell into neglect and disrepair but was completely and stunningly restored with additional accommodations into what she is now\, in the presenter’s opinion\, the world’s most beautiful cruise ship.  Peter will also share images of the SEA CLOUD’s original interiors through the years and will show what the ship is like today. \nPeter Knego is an ocean liner historian\, journalist\, photographer\, videographer\, blogger and lecturer.  With a life-long passion for mid-century modern ocean liners and the treasures that filled them\, during nine trips to India\, Peter salvaged container loads of materials from a number of ocean liners in the throes of scrapping on the beaches of Alang and simultaneously took the opportunity to record their “last breaths” in two documentary series: “The World’s Passenger Fleet” and “On the Road to Alang.”  Just a few months ago\, Peter treated PONY Branch members and friends to a tour of his southern California home turned mid-century modern ocean liner which was created using salvaged ocean liner artifacts.  His home has been featured in The New York Times and elsewhere.  Peter is a recipient of the SSHSA Samuel Ward Stanton Award for Lifetime Achievement in ship preservation.  Ever busy\, Peter also operates the website MidShipCentury.com which offers up artwork\, furniture and fittings from various ships scrapped at Alang. \nIf you missed Peter’s presentation at our March virtual membership meeting\, or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for this encore showing on Saturday\, May 10\, 2025. \n(Photo: Peter Knego collection)

SUMMARY:GRAND & GLORIOUS: THE GREAT CUNARD LINE ***ENCORE PRESENTATION*** Presented by Bill Miller
DESCRIPTION:On its 185th anniversary\, former PONY Branch chairman Bill Miller will take us on a grand review of the Cunard Line\, quite possibly the most famous shipping company on all the seas. Few shipping lines have had the great history to match Cunard. Bill will begin just after the Second World War as Cunarders\, including the legendary QUEEN ELIZABETH and QUEEN MARY\, return from strenuous war duties\, and the Company assembles the biggest passenger ship fleet on the North Atlantic. They would have 14 liners at one point and carry as much as a quarter of all trans-ocean passengers. Bill will review the fleet\, revive the glamor and style of crossings\, from film stars to steamer trunks\, and take us from the likes of beloved MAURETANIA and CARONIA to the current QUEEN MARY 2 and the new QUEEN ANNE. \nThe whistles are sounding — all aboard on Cunard! \nCalled “Mr. Ocean Liner”\, William Miller is considered an international authority on the subjects of ocean liners and cruise ships. He has written over 100 books on the subject. Bill\, a world traveler with hundreds of sea voyages\, is a much sought-after presenter and blogger. He is also a career educator. Bill is a founding member of the WSS-PONY Branch. Bill was named Outstanding American Maritime Scholar in 1994 and received the U.S. Maritime Preservation Award and the Ocean Liner Council’s Silver Riband Award in 2004. Additionally\, Bill was the 2017 recipient of SSHSA’s Samuel Ward Stanton Award for Lifetime Achievement. \nIf you missed Bill’s presentation at our February virtual membership meeting\, or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for this encore showing on Saturday\, April 12\, 2025. \n(Photo: Bill Miller collection)

SUMMARY:TOWING THE SS UNITED STATES TO MOBILE\, ALABAMA Presented by Capt. Mike Vinik
DESCRIPTION:Captain Mike Vinik\, owner of the New Jersey-based tugboat company\, Vinik Marine\, captained the tugboat VINIK NO.6 on a 10-day journey from Philadelphia\, PA\, down the east coast and around the coast of Florida to safely deliver the historic vessel SS UNITED STATES to its new temporary home in Mobile\, Alabama. The WSS-PONY Branch is pleased to welcome Captain Vinik as he provides his firsthand account of the historic 1\,855-mile trip with his dedicated crew of seven using the now famous VINIK NO.6\, and a half mile long 2¼-in diameter steel cable. From their departure on February 19\, 2025 until their arrival on March 3\, 2025\, the tow continued 24/7 and included a spate of bad weather conditions off Cape Hatteras\, North Carolina. \nCaptain Vinik attended the Marine Academy of Science and Technology in New Jersey and later graduated from the New York Maritime College at Fort Schuyler in 2003. Just over a year later\, he took a bold step by purchasing his first tugboat that was in “pretty bad shape [and then] spent 10 months getting it back up and running again.” Mike has never looked back. \n(Photo: Capt. SUMMARY:DUTCH LINERS TO THE EAST INDIES ***ENCORE PRESENTATION*** Presented by Captain Albert Schoonderbeek
DESCRIPTION:The Kingdom of the Netherlands included colonies in the Far East from the 17th century onwards until 1948 when they became the Republic of Indonesia.  With the advent of steam\, the Dutch VOC (United (East) Indies Company) morphed into several companies such as the Netherland Line\, Rotterdam Lloyd\, and Royal Packet.  In the same way the British Empire had morphed the P&O\, Orient and B.I shipping companies. \nTo maintain a regular service to and from the mother country\, a large fleet was needed to sail like clockwork through the Suez Canal.  The inter-island fleet of Royal Packet (KPM) was even larger.  The heyday was the 1920’s and 30’s with ships such as JOHAN VAN OLDENBARNEVELT\, the DEMPO and BALOERAN\, and a brief resurrection after WWII with the MS ORANJE and MS WILLEM RUYS. \nDue to political reasons\, the fleets became smaller and smaller and eventually all companies were absorbed into Nedlloyd.  With containerization\, Nedlloyd eventually merged into Maersk Lines.  Apart from some office buildings in Amsterdam\, Rotterdam\, and the Far East\, there is not much left that reminds us of those days.  In the Netherlands those times are known as ‘Tempo Doeloe’ which is Indonesian for ‘The Good Times.’ \nCapt. Albert will condense this enormous fleet and the story of its worldwide reach into his presentation.  He will also provide insights into the rich Dutch Empire shipping history. \nCapt. Albert J. Schoonderbeek served with Holland America Line for 42 years; culminating in his appointment as the line’s Fleet Master. He writes and lectures frequently about Holland America Line and passenger ship history\, and he maintains a website and blog www.captainalbert.com.  In addition to authoring four books on the topic of Holland America Line\, he is also the co-author of HAL’s official 125-year company history. \nIf you missed Capt. Schoonderbeek’s presentation at our November virtual membership meeting or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for this encore showing on Saturday\, February 8\, 2025. \n(Photo: Capt. SUMMARY:ROYAL VIKING LINE - BEFORE AND BEYOND ***ENCORE PRESENTATION***Presented by Clive Harvey
DESCRIPTION:While the origins of Royal Viking Line can be traced back to 1967\, its true origins go back much further. Bergen Line\, the initial company behind what would become Royal Viking Line\, had made a name for itself by operating cruises during the inter-war years with the luxurious yacht-like vessels STELLA POLARIS and METEOR.  After World War II\, Bergen Line made a return to cruising operations using the 1931-built VENUS on winter cruises from Plymouth to Madeira and the Canary Islands and with the then new METEOR on cruises further afield. \nBergen Line looked to expand its cruising operations. The Line worked with Knud E. Hansen A/S on a cruise ship design with the intention to offer world-class cruising that was just that little bit more special than all other luxury ships at the time. Once the order had been placed\, Bergen Line was approached by two other Norwegian shipping companies\, Det Nordenfjelske and A F Klaveness\, and in 1970 they founded Royal Viking Line. \nRoyal Viking Line achieved all that Bergen Line had envisaged and probably more. Its first three ships ROYAL VIKING STAR\, ROYAL VIKING SKY\, and ROYAL VIKING SEA became synonymous with worldwide luxury cruising. Although the life of Royal Viking Line itself was not long\, it became legendary. The ships themselves led diverse careers though ending with companies that lavished care upon them and thus earning them legions more loyal followers. They sailed for almost 50 years\, yet even at the end they seemed to remain timeless. This is their story. \nClive Harvey has a lifelong love of ocean liners. He is a former longtime editor of Sea Lines magazine and has written numerous ocean liner related articles and books\, including R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth\, The Ultimate Ship. Clive currently resides in the UK and is the owner of a boutique B&B. \nIf you missed Clive’s presentation at our October virtual membership meeting or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for this encore showing on Saturday\, December 7\, 2024. \n(Photo: Clive Harvey collection) \n

SUMMARY:DUTCH LINERS TO THE EAST INDIES Presented by Captain Albert Schoonderbeek
\n(Photo: Capt. SUMMARY:CARNIVAL RADIANCE 4-Nt Cruise From Long Beach\, CA\, Plus QUEEN MARY Pre-Cruise Activities
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nDuring the weekend of November 8-10\, 2024\, 17 PONY Branch members joined the Steamship Historical Society of America for their annual meeting\, this year held at the QUEEN MARY Hotel in Long Beach\, CA. In addition to exploring the fabled ocean liner\, attendees had the opportunity to view the ocean liner memorabilia collection of Dr. Nelson Arnstein at his home in Long Beach\, attend presentations on the SS ROTTERDAM (V) and the SSHSA archives and collections\, and attend a cocktail reception and gala dinner on Saturday evening featuring a presentation by Peter Knego on Maritime Modernism Afloat. On Sunday\, attendees were welcomed by Peter at his home in Oceanside for lunch and a tour of his extensive museum-quality collection of mid-century ocean liner furnishings and artwork\, acquired during numerous trips to ship breakers around the world. \nOn Monday\, 41 SSHSA and WSS-PONY Branch members\, family and friends embarked on a four-night cruise out of Long Beach aboard CARNIVAL RADIANCE (formerly the CARNIVAL VICTORY). Although a port call at Catalina Island was cancelled due to rough seas\, members did not lack for fun activities\, including a port call at Ensenada\, Mexico; a visit with Captain Eduardo Ferrone\, the ship’s Master\, on the bridge of the RADIANCE; a presentation on passenger-ship builder’s plates by Captain Terry Tilton\, U.S.N. (Ret); and two cocktail receptions hosted by SSHSA and Carnival. Our thanks to the SSHSA\, the QUEEN MARY Hotel\, and the crew of the CARNIVAL RADIANCE for a very enjoyable week in the company of fellow ship enthusiasts. \n(Photo: carnival-news.com) \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:ROYAL VIKING LINE - BEFORE AND BEYONDPresented by Clive Harvey
\n(Photo: Clive Harvey collection) \n

SUMMARY:THE ART AND DESIGN OF MATSON'S POSTWAR LINERS ***ENCORE PRESENTATION*** Presented by Wayne Yanda
DESCRIPTION:Aloha!  During the postwar era\, the iconic white ships of Matson Lines were the way to travel to Hawaii and the South Seas. The quartet of LURLINE\, MATSONIA\, MARIPOSA\, and MONTEREY were practically rebuilt from the keel up to become icons of luxury travel in the Pacific. Their modern interiors\, by designers Raymond Loewy and Harry Neafie – crafted to ensconce the traveler in Polynesia the moment they stepped aboard – showcased murals and sculpture inspired by the destinations. Artists selected hailed from both coasts\, including Edna Andrade\, Esther Bruton\, Helen Bruton\, Marion Cunningham\, Francesco di Cocco\, Sargent Johnson\, Peter Ostuni\, Emmy Lou Packard\, Anton Refregier\, Louis Ross\, and Jacques Schnier. At our September membership meeting we joined maritime historian Wayne Yanda for a look at the modern-primitive stylings of these “Pacific Playgrounds.” \nWayne Yanda is a freelance graphic designer. He is also Editor and Contributor to the Ocean Times\, the quarterly journal of the Steamship Historical Society of America’s Southern California Chapter. He has catalogued the bulk of the art commissioned for American liners built between 1927 and 1962 on his website www.muralsonthehighseas.com. \nIf you missed Wayne’s presentation in September or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for this encore showing on Saturday\, October 12th. \n(Photo: Wayne Yanda collection) \n

SUMMARY:CARNIVAL VENEZIA LUNCH & TOUR
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 14\, 2024\, thirty PONY Branch members and friends traveled to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal to visit the CARNIVAL VENEZIA as guests of Carnival Cruise Line. Originally built in 2019 as COSTA VENEZIA to serve the Chinese market for Costa Cruises\, the 135\,225 GT\, 4\,208 passenger\, Venice-class ship was transferred to Carnival in 2023 after a refit in Spain\, and now sails from her homeport in Manhattan under the moniker “Carnival Fun Italian Style.” After enjoying the lunch buffet at the Lido Marketplace\, those attending then had ample time to explore the Venetian-themed decor of the ship’s public spaces before disembarking prior to her departure on a 7-night cruise to Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, and Bermuda. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Carnival Cruise Line for the opportunity to visit the CARNIVAL VENEZIA.\n \n(Photo Credit: Stuart Gewirtzman)

SUMMARY:SWEDISH TASTE ON THE HIGH SEAS***ENCORE PRESENTATION*** Presented by Christian Roden
DESCRIPTION:Swedes have been sailing to America since 1638\, bringing their language\, cultural traditions\, and handicrafts. By the 1920s\, the new frontier of Art Deco set new trends for consumer markets\, and American audiences began developing a taste for Swedish design. A major factor in this trend was the Swedish ocean liner KUNGSHOLM\, one of the first ships to use the Art Deco style in her passenger quarters. Not only did her interiors prove wildly popular\, but they also influenced the development of land-based buildings\, particularly the American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia. At our May 2024 membership meeting the PONY Branch welcomed maritime historian Christian Roden for an enlightening program about the forgotten connections between the KUNGSHOLM and the development of Swedish-American museums in the United States during the roaring twenties. \nChristian Roden currently works for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Foundation and has a wide range of professional experience in the museum\, cultural heritage\, and higher education sectors. He has designed and curated museum exhibits\, and contributed to and appeared on the History Channel’s Secrets of the Lost Liners. He also publishes and lectures widely. Alongside scholars and experts from across Europe and North America\, he participates in the Ocean Modern Advanced Research Group. He holds an MA in material culture studies from the University of Delaware\, and a BA in English\, art history\, and studio art from Washington & Lee University\, with additional studies at St. Anne’s College\, Oxford and École France Langue. SUMMARY:VICTORIA OLD AND NEW ***ENCORE PRESENTATION***Presented by Tom Rinaldi
DESCRIPTION:Fearing that the end might be near for one of the most interesting veteran passenger ships on the planet\, WSS-PONY Branch member Tom Rinaldi set off in 2023 for Tanzania in East Africa\, where the former R.M.S. VICTORIA has provided service across her namesake lake for most of the last 70 years. Reaching Lake Victoria after a two-day rail journey across the country\, Tom managed to secure passage over-and-back aboard this little-known “liner on the lake” before it was too late. In this program\, originally presented at our April membership meeting\, Tom shares the story of his most recent African adventure\, including a look at the history of the old VICTORIA and the future of ferry traffic on the lakes of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. \nThomas Rinaldi grew up in the Hudson River Valley near Poughkeepsie\, New York. He is the author of “Patented: 1\,000 Design Patents” (Phaidon\, 2021)\, “New York Neon” (W.W. Norton\, 2012) and the co-author of the book “Hudson Valley Ruins: Forgotten Landmarks of an American Landscape” (University Press of New England\, 2006). His photographs have been published in the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, the New York Post\, the New York Observer\, Westchester Magazine\, CNN Online\, and elsewhere. Tom has exhibited at the New York State Museum at Albany and at the Municipal Art Society of New York. He is a regular contributor to the UK-based magazine “Ships Monthly.” Tom holds degrees from Georgetown University and Columbia University\, and has worked for the National Park Service\, the New York State Office of Parks\, Recreation & Historic Preservation\, and the Central Park Conservancy\, and currently works as an architectural designer in New York City. \nIf you missed Tom’s presentation in April or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for this encore showing on Saturday\, June 15th. \n(Tom Rinaldi photo) \n

In this presentation\, Tom will share the story of his most recent African adventure\, including a look at the history of the old VICTORIA and the future of ferry traffic on the lakes of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. \n(Tom Rinaldi photo) \n

SUMMARY:GRACE LINE PASSENGER-FREIGHTERS IN THE 1950s ***ENCORE PRESENTATION*** Presented by George Gillow
DESCRIPTION:Growing up in an American mining town in northern Chile was quite an adventure. One of the most exciting times for our speaker\, George Gillow\, was traveling to the U.S. on Grace Line passenger-freighters thanks to the Anaconda Mining Company who sent their employees’ families to the U.S. for vacations every three years. This presentation is about what it was like traveling on these passenger-freighters. It was very different than traveling on modern cruise ships. \nGeorge Gillow completed a 39-year career as an Electronic Engineer and Technical Manager. He spent the next 20 years working on maritime systems such as GPS\, ship handling simulators and vessel traffic services. In the 1980’s\, George played a key role in getting the first cruise ship\, SS AZURE SEAS\, to visit and establish regular cruise ship service to San Diego\, CA. He also supported the establishment of the Port of San Diego Cruise Ship Consortium. \n(Image: George Gillow collection) \n
