SUMMARY:VICTORIA OLD AND NEWPresented by Tom Rinaldi
DESCRIPTION:Fearing that the end might be near for one of the most interesting veteran passenger ships on the planet\, WSS-PONY Branch member Tom Rinaldi set off in 2023 for Tanzania in East Africa\, where the former R.M.S. VICTORIA has provided service across her namesake lake for most of the last 70 years. Reaching Lake Victoria after a two-day rail journey across the country\, Tom managed to secure passage over-and-back aboard this little-known “liner on the lake” before it was too late. In this presentation\, Tom will share the story of his most recent African adventure\, including a look at the history of the old VICTORIA and the future of ferry traffic on the lakes of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. \nThomas Rinaldi grew up in the Hudson River Valley near Poughkeepsie\, New York. He is the author of “Patented: 1\,000 Design Patents” (Phaidon\, 2021)\, “New York Neon” (W.W. Norton\, 2012) and the co-author of the book “Hudson Valley Ruins: Forgotten Landmarks of an American Landscape” (University Press of New England\, 2006). His photographs have been published in the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, the New York Post\, the New York Observer\, Westchester Magazine\, CNN Online\, and elsewhere. Tom has exhibited at the New York State Museum at Albany and at the Municipal Art Society of New York. He is a regular contributor to the UK-based magazine “Ships Monthly.” Tom holds degrees from Georgetown University and Columbia University\, and has worked for the National Park Service\, the New York State Office of Parks\, Recreation & Historic Preservation\, and the Central Park Conservancy\, and currently works as an architectural designer in New York City. \n(Tom Rinaldi photo) \n

SUMMARY:TS EMPIRE STATE VII SHIP TOUR AND VISIT TO THE MARITIME INDUSTRY MUSEUM AT SUNY MARITIME COLLEGE
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, April 14\, 2024\, 26 PONY Branch members and guests were welcomed by the State University of New York Maritime College in the Bronx\, NY\, for a tour of their new state-of-the-art training ship\, the EMPIRE STATE (VII). Built by Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia\, PA\, she is the first of five new government-owned National Security Multi-Mission Vessels that will serve a dual purpose as floating classrooms for the nation’s five state maritime academies\, and as humanitarian and disaster relief platforms during times of national emergency. EMPIRE STATE (VII) can accommodate 600 cadets while at sea\, in addition to providing modern hospital facilities\, a helicopter pad\, vehicle roll-on/roll-off capability\, and the ability to accommodate up to 1\,000 people during humanitarian missions.\n\n\n\nAfter touring the ship\, those attending enjoyed lunch in the college’s “Mess Deck” and then had an opportunity to visit the impressive Maritime Industry Museum housed in historic Fort Schuyler on the campus.\n\n(Photo Credit: Stuart Gewirtzman)

SUMMARY:GRACE LINE PASSENGER-FREIGHTERS IN THE 1950s ***ENCORE PRESENTATION*** Presented by George Gillow
DESCRIPTION:Growing up in an American mining town in northern Chile was quite an adventure. One of the most exciting times for our speaker\, George Gillow\, was traveling to the U.S. on Grace Line passenger-freighters thanks to the Anaconda Mining Company who sent their employees’ families to the U.S. for vacations every three years. This presentation is about what it was like traveling on these passenger-freighters. It was very different than traveling on modern cruise ships. \nGeorge Gillow completed a 39-year career as an Electronic Engineer and Technical Manager. He spent the next 20 years working on maritime systems such as GPS\, ship handling simulators and vessel traffic services. In the 1980’s\, George played a key role in getting the first cruise ship\, SS AZURE SEAS\, to visit and establish regular cruise ship service to San Diego\, CA. He also supported the establishment of the Port of San Diego Cruise Ship Consortium. \n(Image: George Gillow collection) \n

SUMMARY:GENESIS OF A QUEEN: QUEEN MARY 2 ***ENCORE PRESENTATION*** Presented by Dr. Stephen M. Payne\, O.B.E.
DESCRIPTION:At our January virtual membership meeting\, Dr. Stephen Payne\, O.B.E.\, designer of the Cunard transatlantic liner QUEEN MARY 2\, presented an illustrated lecture celebrating the 20th anniversary of the commissioning of the ship. “Genesis of a Queen: QUEEN MARY 2” is a very personal journey on how the design of QUEEN MARY 2 evolved and what makes her an ocean liner as distinct from a cruise ship. This is considered the definitive lecture about QUEEN MARY 2. \nIf you missed Stephen’s presentation in January or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for this encore showing on Saturday\, March 30th. \n(Stephen Payne photo) \n

SUMMARY:EUROPEAN IMMIGRATION TO CANADA AND THE U.S. ***ENCORE PRESENTATION*** Presented by Ted Scull
DESCRIPTION:With increasingly large numbers of Europeans desiring passage to Canada and the United States in the 19th century\, many shipping lines built larger and faster ships to meet the demands right up to World War I. It was these souls who sailed in steerage that filled these ships and generated the profits for the shipping lines rather than those in first class. At this encore presentation of the program presented at our November/December membership meeting\, author and PONY Branch past-chairman Ted Scull discusses how this important trans-Atlantic trade fluctuated\, and how new ships were built to accommodate it into the 1960s. \nIf you missed Ted’s informative presentation in December or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for this encore showing on Saturday\, January 6th. \n(Ted Scull Photo: BERLIN seen on her last sailing from sailing from New York on 9/3/67. SUMMARY:DEATH BY FIRE AND ICE: THE STEAMBOAT LEXINGTON CALAMITY ***ENCORE PRESENTATION*** Presented by Brian E. O'Connor
DESCRIPTION:At our October meeting\, the PONY Branch welcomed Brian E. O’Connor\, author of Death by Fire and Ice: The Steamboat Lexington Calamity\, who discussed the little-known story of the sinking of the steamboat LEXINGTON on Long Island Sound in January 1840. Built in 1835 by Cornelius Vanderbilt\, the LEXINGTON left Manhattan bound for Stonington\, Connecticut\, on a bitterly cold day carrying an estimated one hundred forty-seven passengers and crew and a cargo of\, among other things\, baled cotton. After making her way up an ice-encrusted East River into Long Island Sound\, she caught fire off Long Island’s north shore. With the crew unable to extinguish the fire\, the blaze burned through the ship’s wheel and tiller ropes\, the engine died\, and the ship floundered in the prevailing wind and current. \nAs the night wore on\, the temperature plummeted to well below zero. With no hope of rescue on the dark horizon\, the forlorn passengers and crew faced a dreadful decision: remain on board and perish in the searing flames or jump overboard and succumb within minutes to the Sound’s icy waters. By early morning all but one passenger and three members of the crew perished. The tragedy remains the worst maritime disaster in the history of Long Island Sound. \nWithin days\, the New York City Coroner convened an inquest to determine the cause of the disaster and after two weeks of testimony it concluded that if the crew had acted appropriately the fire could have been extinguished and a large portion\, if not all\, on board could have been saved. \nThe public’s reaction to the verdict was scathing. Calls for criminal charges and improved passenger safety legislation were made. The Congressional solution balanced the need to insulate the nation’s shipping industry from ruinous liability for lost cargo\, while at the same time greatly enhancing passenger safety on the nation’s steamboats. \nOur presenter\, Brian E. O’Connor\, was born in Brooklyn\, New York. He received a BA\, magna cum laude\, in government and politics from St. John’s University and a JD from St. John’s University School of Law\, where he served as the publication’s editor of the Law Review. After beginning his legal career with a clerkship on the New York Court of Appeals\, he became a partner in a prominent Wall Street law firm\, where he specialized in complex commercial litigation for thirty-eight years before retiring as the firm’s General Counsel in 2017. \nIf you missed Brian’s informative presentation in October or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for an encore showing on Saturday\, December 16th. \n(Image: Naval Institute Press)

SUMMARY:EXPLORING THE QUARANTINE ISLANDS ***ENCORE PRESENTATION*** Presented by Pat Salmon
DESCRIPTION:After the famous burning of the Quarantine Hospital at Tompkinsville\, Staten Island on September 1 and 2\, 1858\, something had to be done to accommodate the thousands of arriving immigrants with contagious diseases. The historic Quarantine Islands\, Hoffman and Swinburne\, played a key role in our immigration history for decades. They were the first and sometimes the only stop for immigrants entering the United States. \nDue to technical difficulties\, we were unable to livestream or record Pat Salmon’s program\, “Exploring the Quarantine Islands of New York\,” at our September 24\, 2023 membership meeting at the National Lighthouse Museum on Staten Island. We have\, however\, obtained a recording of Pat’s program from a previous presentation at the Noble Maritime Collection and we will be showing it via Zoom at 10:00 a.m. (Eastern Time) on Saturday\, October 14\, 2023. We encourage everyone who missed the September meeting to join us for this special Zoom presentation. \n(Image: www.nytimes.com)

SUMMARY:EXPLORING THE QUARANTINE ISLANDS Presented by Pat Salmon
DESCRIPTION:After the famous burning of the Quarantine Hospital at Tompkinsville\, Staten Island on September 1 and 2\, 1858\, something had to be done to accommodate the thousands of arriving immigrants with contagious diseases. The historic Quarantine Islands\, Hoffman and Swinburne\, played a key role in our immigration history for decades. They were the first and sometimes the only stop for immigrants entering the United States. \nOn Sunday\, September 24\, 2023\, WSS-PONY Branch members and friends enjoyed a presentation on the Quarantine Islands of New York by historian Pat Salmon at the National Lighthouse Museum on Staten Island. Following the program refreshments were served and those attending in-person had an opportunity to tour the museum. A planned post-meeting boat cruise to the Quarantine Islands and circumnavigation of Staten Island unfortunately had to be cancelled as a required Coast Guard inspection of the vessel could not be scheduled in time. \n(Image: www.nytimes.com)

SUMMARY:A LOVE FOR LINERS ***ENCORE SHOWING*** Presented by Astrid Drew\, SSHSA Archivist
DESCRIPTION:At our May membership meeting the PONY Branch welcomed Astrid Drew who presented a visual program on the Vincent M. Love Collection\, currently on loan to the Steamship Historical Society of America (SSHSA). Astrid is the archivist at the SSHSA\, an independent non-profit focused on the history of engine powered vessels. In this presentation\, we learned about SSHSA’s dynamic collections\, with a special focus on the Vincent M. Love Collection. Mr. Love was a long-time SSHSA member and maritime enthusiast who worked for several shipping companies such as United States Lines. He had a particular interest in ocean liners and White Star Line’s TITANIC\, and collected widely. His collections include beautiful lithographs and posters\, as well as TITANIC artifacts such as passenger lists\, a first-class deck plan\, and a unique card catalog of passengers and crew. Astrid also provided an overview of the vast SSHSA collections as well as her role as archivist. The SSHSA collections comprise hundreds of thousands of images\, artifacts\, ephemera\, memorabilia\, and artwork\, as well as a maritime reference library located at the Ship History Center in Warwick\, RI. \nAs archivist for the Steamship Historical Society of America\, Astrid Drew manages and organizes collections and digital media\, and assists the public in learning more about the history of engine-powered vessels. She holds a Masters of Library and Information Science\, with a focus in archives and preservation\, from Simmons College. \nIf you missed Astrid’s presentation in May or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for the encore showing this Saturday\, July 15th. \n(Image: Vincent M. SUMMARY:SHIPS OF SPLENDOR: 100 YEARS OF OCEAN LINERS ***ENCORE SHOWING*** Presented by Bill Miller
DESCRIPTION:Ocean liners – they were floating palaces\, castles of the sea\, ocean-going resorts. Noted maritime author and lecturer Bill Miller has recently written an all-color book about them titled Ships of Splendor. His featured passenger ships range from the likes of the MAURETANIA and MAJESTIC a century ago\, in the 1920s\, to the age of the SS UNITED STATES and QE2 in the 1950s and ’60s. \nAt our April membership meeting Bill presented something of a grand review\, commenting on some of the more notable ships. In photos from the book\, they “sailed by” in revived voyages. If you missed Bill’s presentation in April or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for this encore showing on Saturday\, June 17\, 2023. \n(Above photo – New York’s Luxury Liner Row seen in March 1937 — from the left:  EUROPA\, REX\, NORMANDIE\, GEORGIC AND BERENGARIA. SUMMARY:DESIGNING CARNIVAL ***ENCORE SHOWING*** Presented by Joseph Farcus
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an encore showing of “DESIGNING CARNIVAL” presented by Joe Farcus\, noted architect and cruise ship design legend. The program focuses on his career in architecture\, his boyhood obsession with ships and how he came to define the concept of “entertainment architecture” in the cruise industry. SUMMARY:MAIDEN VOYAGE OF THE LORD OF THE HIGHLANDS ***ENCORE SHOWING*** Presented by Pat Dacey
DESCRIPTION:At our March 2023 membership meeting at the National Opera Center in Manhattan\, PONY Branch Vice-Chairman Pat Dacey presented a program on the maiden voyage of Hebridean Island Cruises’ LORD OF THE HIGHLANDS. The voyage from the Scottish resort town of Oban to Kyle of Lochalsh included the Caledonian Canal which opened in 1822 connecting the Scottish east coast at Inverness with the west coast at Corpach and was designed by the noted Scottish engineer Thomas Telford. Pat explored the history\, design and experience of sailing on this unique vessel which was originally a Turkish ferry that underwent a three-year conversion into a luxury river cruise ship. \nIf you missed Pat’s presentation in March or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for the encore showing on Saturday\, May 20th. \n(Photo: hebridean.co.uk)

SUMMARY:TITANIC\, THE EXHIBITION
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nDuring the fall of 2022\, “Titanic\, The Exhibition” arrived in NYC after a run in London. On May 7\, 2023\, members and guests attending our May membership meeting were invited to view this new exhibit created by the Spanish Company Musealia with contributions by TITANIC historian Claes-Göran Wetterholm. The exhibition\, a short 15-minute walk from the meeting location\, was a natural segue from the evening’s program on maritime collections with specific emphasis on TITANIC and White Star related items. The exhibition featured over 200 original objects from TITANIC and her sisters\, in addition to life-size recreations of the ship’s interiors\, and photographs\, handwritten letters\, wayward keepsakes\, and other personal belongings telling countless stories about the fates and heroic deeds on board. A narrated audio guide included sound effects\, music and testimonies from TITANIC passengers and crew. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:EXPLORING THE ANDREA DORIA ***ENCORE SHOWING*** Presented by John Moyer\, Salvor in Possession
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, January 14\, 2023\, at 10:00 AM\, join us for an encore showing of “ANDREA DORIA – Rescue at Sea\,” a program by diver John Moyer originally presented at our November membership meeting at the Noble Maritime Collection at Sailors’ Snug Harbor. John’s program focused on over 60 years of diving to the ANDREA DORIA with photographs and newly captured video. In 1993\, John Moyer was awarded an Admiralty Arrest in U.S. Federal Court and named Salvor in Possession of the wreck. In the ruling\, the judge stated John’s “research and archeological documentation of his effort indicate a respect for the ANDREA DORIA as something more than just a commercial salvage project.” \nIf you missed John Moyer’s presentation in November or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for the encore showing on Saturday\, January 14th. \n(Image courtesy of The Noble Maritime Collection)

SUMMARY:NORTH BY NORTH STAR***ENCORE SHOWING***Presented by Pat Dacey
DESCRIPTION:Join PONY Branch Chairman Pat Dacey on a photographic journey north from Longyearbyen\, Norway to Moffen Island\, crossing 80 degrees North and back onboard the historic 1956-built M/S NORDSTJERNEN (The North Star). The classic NORDSTJERNEN previously sailed the Norwegian Coastal Express Service and Svalbard Express service to Spitsbergen until 1994\, and then cruised occasionally and served as a replacement vessel for Hurtigruten until 2012 when she was purchased by Vestland Classic. Since 2012 NORDSTJERNEN has been sailing exclusively in the Arctic Ocean\, once again carrying her former Bergen Line funnel livery. \nNORDSTJERNEN is an outstanding example of 1950’s ship design\, with many technical and design features reaching back to the 1930s. In 2012 the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage designated NORDSTJERNEN as fully protected under their authority for the protection of historical monuments. \n“Connect with your inner explorer” as you admire the classic décor\, public rooms\, working areas and deck space as the ship heads north on an August 2022 voyage\, sailing to numerous fjords and making expedition landings\, while observing glaciers\, polar bears\, walruses\, and many other examples of Arctic wildlife. \nIf you missed Pat’s engaging presentation in October or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for the encore showing this Saturday\, December 10th. \n(Pat Dacey photo)
