SUMMARY:DEATH BY FIRE AND ICE: THE STEAMBOAT LEXINGTON CALAMITY Presented by Brian E. O'Connor
DESCRIPTION:At our October meeting\, the PONY Branch welcomed Brian E. O’Connor\, author of Death by Fire and Ice: The Steamboat Lexington Calamity\, who discussed the little-known story of the sinking of the steamboat LEXINGTON on Long Island Sound in January 1840. Built in 1835 by Cornelius Vanderbilt\, the LEXINGTON left Manhattan bound for Stonington\, Connecticut\, on a bitterly cold day carrying an estimated one hundred forty-seven passengers and crew and a cargo of\, among other things\, baled cotton. After making her way up an ice-encrusted East River into Long Island Sound\, she caught fire off Long Island’s north shore. With the crew unable to extinguish the fire\, the blaze burned through the ship’s wheel and tiller ropes\, the engine died\, and the ship floundered in the prevailing wind and current. \nAs the night wore on\, the temperature plummeted to well below zero. With no hope of rescue on the dark horizon\, the forlorn passengers and crew faced a dreadful decision: remain on board and perish in the searing flames or jump overboard and succumb within minutes to the Sound’s icy waters. By early morning all but one passenger and three members of the crew perished. The tragedy remains the worst maritime disaster in the history of Long Island Sound. \nWithin days\, the New York City Coroner convened an inquest to determine the cause of the disaster and after two weeks of testimony it concluded that if the crew had acted appropriately the fire could have been extinguished and a large portion\, if not all\, on board could have been saved. \nThe public’s reaction to the verdict was scathing. Calls for criminal charges and improved passenger safety legislation were made. The Congressional solution balanced the need to insulate the nation’s shipping industry from ruinous liability for lost cargo\, while at the same time greatly enhancing passenger safety on the nation’s steamboats. \nOur presenter\, Brian E. O’Connor\, was born in Brooklyn\, New York. He received a BA\, magna cum laude\, in government and politics from St. John’s University and a JD from St. John’s University School of Law\, where he served as the publication’s editor of the Law Review. After beginning his legal career with a clerkship on the New York Court of Appeals\, he became a partner in a prominent Wall Street law firm\, where he specialized in complex commercial litigation for thirty-eight years before retiring as the firm’s General Counsel in 2017. \n(Image: Naval Institute Press)

SUMMARY:EXPLORING THE QUARANTINE ISLANDS ***ENCORE PRESENTATION*** Presented by Pat Salmon
DESCRIPTION:After the famous burning of the Quarantine Hospital at Tompkinsville\, Staten Island on September 1 and 2\, 1858\, something had to be done to accommodate the thousands of arriving immigrants with contagious diseases. The historic Quarantine Islands\, Hoffman and Swinburne\, played a key role in our immigration history for decades. They were the first and sometimes the only stop for immigrants entering the United States. \nDue to technical difficulties\, we were unable to livestream or record Pat Salmon’s program\, “Exploring the Quarantine Islands of New York\,” at our September 24\, 2023 membership meeting at the National Lighthouse Museum on Staten Island. We have\, however\, obtained a recording of Pat’s program from a previous presentation at the Noble Maritime Collection and we will be showing it via Zoom at 10:00 a.m. (Eastern Time) on Saturday\, October 14\, 2023. We encourage everyone who missed the September meeting to join us for this special Zoom presentation. \n(Image: www.nytimes.com)

Following the program refreshments were served and those attending in-person had an opportunity to tour the museum. A planned post-meeting boat cruise to the Quarantine Islands and circumnavigation of Staten Island unfortunately had to be cancelled as a required Coast Guard inspection of the vessel could not be scheduled in time. \n(Image: www.nytimes.com)

SUMMARY:WHEN THE EAST WENT WEST ***ENCORE SHOWING*** Presented by William Roka
DESCRIPTION:As the momentum of immigration to the United States shifted from Western and Northern Europe to Eastern Europe at the end of the 19th century\, the business environment of moving so many new migrants also evolved. At our July membership meeting\, historian William Roka explored how the great transatlantic corporate juggernauts\, Cunard and Hamburg America Line\, pursued various transit models to stretch their tendrils into Eastern Europe. He also discussed some of the ships plying the waters between East and West\, including Cunard’s CARPATHIA and Austro Americana’s MARTHA WASHINGTON (pictured).\n \nIf you missed William’s informative presentation in July or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for the encore showing on Saturday\, September 16th. \n(Image: Wikipedia)

SUMMARY:SHIPS OF SPLENDOR: 100 YEARS OF OCEAN LINERS ***ENCORE SHOWING*** Presented by Bill Miller
DESCRIPTION:Ocean liners – they were floating palaces\, castles of the sea\, ocean-going resorts. Noted maritime author and lecturer Bill Miller has recently written an all-color book about them titled Ships of Splendor. His featured passenger ships range from the likes of the MAURETANIA and MAJESTIC a century ago\, in the 1920s\, to the age of the SS UNITED STATES and QE2 in the 1950s and ’60s. \nAt our April membership meeting Bill presented something of a grand review\, commenting on some of the more notable ships. In photos from the book\, they “sailed by” in revived voyages. If you missed Bill’s presentation in April or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for this encore showing on Saturday\, June 17\, 2023. \n(Above photo – New York’s Luxury Liner Row seen in March 1937 — from the left:  EUROPA\, REX\, NORMANDIE\, GEORGIC AND BERENGARIA. SUMMARY:TITANIC\, THE EXHIBITION
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nDuring the fall of 2022\, “Titanic\, The Exhibition” arrived in NYC after a run in London. On May 7\, 2023\, members and guests attending our May membership meeting were invited to view this new exhibit created by the Spanish Company Musealia with contributions by TITANIC historian Claes-Göran Wetterholm. The exhibition\, a short 15-minute walk from the meeting location\, was a natural segue from the evening’s program on maritime collections with specific emphasis on TITANIC and White Star related items. The exhibition featured over 200 original objects from TITANIC and her sisters\, in addition to life-size recreations of the ship’s interiors\, and photographs\, handwritten letters\, wayward keepsakes\, and other personal belongings telling countless stories about the fates and heroic deeds on board. A narrated audio guide included sound effects\, music and testimonies from TITANIC passengers and crew. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:SEVEN ROTTERDAMS ***ENCORE SHOWING (NEW DATE)*** Presented by Captain Albert Schoonderbeek
DESCRIPTION:For most of its history Holland America Line has had a ship with the name Rotterdam in its fleet. As a result they are now up to number seven. The ships clearly show the evolution that passenger ship design has made during the last 150 years. During his informative and entertaining program\, Captain Albert Schoonderbeek\, current fleet master of Holland America Line\, showed us how the seven Rotterdams of “The Spotless Fleet” evolved from emigrant carriers into showcases of the latest ideas in cruise travel. \n(Photo: Stuart Gewirtzman)

Pat explored the history\, design and experience of sailing on this unique vessel which was originally a Turkish ferry that underwent a three-year conversion into a luxury river cruise ship. \n(Photo: hebridean.co.uk)

SUMMARY:DESIGNING CARNIVALPresented by Joseph Farcus
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Joe Farcus\, noted architect and cruise ship design legend as he presents a program about his career in architecture\, his boyhood obsession with ships and how he came to define the concept of “entertainment architecture” in the cruise industry. His designs and creative force are responsible for the interior design of over a quarter of a century of Carnival Cruise Lines’ ships as well as ships for Holland America Line and Costa to name a few. From their iconic funnels to the creative and unique style of their interiors\, the “Fun Ships” have been inextricably linked to Joe Farcus.  As such\, Micky Arison\, Chairman of Carnival Corporation has stated about Joe Farcus\, that “There is no individual who has had a more profound impact on cruise ship design”. \n(Photo: Stuart Gewirtzman)

SUMMARY:SEVEN ROTTERDAMSPresented by Captain Albert Schoonderbeek
DESCRIPTION:For most of its history Holland America Line has had a ship with the name Rotterdam in its fleet. As a result they are now up to number seven. The ships clearly show the evolution that passenger ship design has made during the last 150 years. During his informative and entertaining program\, Captain Albert Schoonderbeek\, current fleet master of Holland America Line\, showed us how the seven Rotterdams of “The Spotless Fleet” evolved from emigrant carriers into showcases of the latest ideas in cruise travel. \n(Photo: Stuart Gewirtzman)

SUMMARY:EXPLORING THE ANDREA DORIA ***ENCORE SHOWING*** Presented by John Moyer\, Salvor in Possession
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, January 14\, 2023\, at 10:00 AM\, join us for an encore showing of “ANDREA DORIA – Rescue at Sea\,” a program by diver John Moyer originally presented at our November membership meeting at the Noble Maritime Collection at Sailors’ Snug Harbor. John’s program focused on over 60 years of diving to the ANDREA DORIA with photographs and newly captured video. In 1993\, John Moyer was awarded an Admiralty Arrest in U.S. Federal Court and named Salvor in Possession of the wreck. In the ruling\, the judge stated John’s “research and archeological documentation of his effort indicate a respect for the ANDREA DORIA as something more than just a commercial salvage project.” \nIf you missed John Moyer’s presentation in November or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for the encore showing on Saturday\, January 14th. \n(Image courtesy of The Noble Maritime Collection)

SUMMARY:NORTH BY NORTH STAR***ENCORE SHOWING***Presented by Pat Dacey
DESCRIPTION:Join PONY Branch Chairman Pat Dacey on a photographic journey north from Longyearbyen\, Norway to Moffen Island\, crossing 80 degrees North and back onboard the historic 1956-built M/S NORDSTJERNEN (The North Star). The classic NORDSTJERNEN previously sailed the Norwegian Coastal Express Service and Svalbard Express service to Spitsbergen until 1994\, and then cruised occasionally and served as a replacement vessel for Hurtigruten until 2012 when she was purchased by Vestland Classic. Since 2012 NORDSTJERNEN has been sailing exclusively in the Arctic Ocean\, once again carrying her former Bergen Line funnel livery. \nNORDSTJERNEN is an outstanding example of 1950’s ship design\, with many technical and design features reaching back to the 1930s. In 2012 the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage designated NORDSTJERNEN as fully protected under their authority for the protection of historical monuments. \n“Connect with your inner explorer” as you admire the classic décor\, public rooms\, working areas and deck space as the ship heads north on an August 2022 voyage\, sailing to numerous fjords and making expedition landings\, while observing glaciers\, polar bears\, walruses\, and many other examples of Arctic wildlife. \nIf you missed Pat’s engaging presentation in October or would like to see it again\, we encourage you to join us for the encore showing this Saturday\, December 10th. \n(Pat Dacey photo)

SUMMARY:THE HISTORY OF THE STATEN ISLAND FERRY***ENCORE SHOWING***Presented by Patricia M. Salmon
DESCRIPTION:Most people do not realize that ferries to and from Staten Island have existed since the time the indigenous Lenape tribe inhabited what is now New York City. As the island evolved and its transportation system became more elaborate\, the ferries that operated also changed. This program\, presented by Patricia M. Salmon\, covered more than 400 years of Staten Island ferry service\, including the entrepreneurs involved\, the ferryboats themselves\, and the landings that existed all around what was once an isolated island. \nPatricia M. Salmon retired as Curator of History at the Staten Island Museum in 2012 and has been a Staten Island resident for almost fifty years. Ms. Salmon has authored the books Realms of History: The Cemeteries of Staten Island\, The Staten Island Ferry: A History\, Murder & Mayhem on Staten Island and Staten Island Slayings: Murderers and Mysteries of the Forgotten Borough. \nThis encore showing featured a recording of Pat’s program originally presented on September 30th. \n(Image courtesy of Patricia M. SUMMARY:HARBOR CRUISE TO VIEW MS ROTTERDAM (VII)
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 27\, 2022\, 17 members of the PONY Branch and the Steamship Historical Society of America embarked on Sea Scout Ship 228’s historic 1953 Higgins T-Boat\, SEA DART II\, to escort Holland America Line’s Pinnacle-class MS ROTTERDAM (VII) on her maiden departure from New York as she continued her 15-day transatlantic voyage honoring the maiden voyage of ROTTERDAM (I) in 1872. Departing from the National Lighthouse Museum on Staten Island under sunny skies\, we sailed past the Staten Island Ferry maintenance facility and the Ollis-class ferry DOROTHY DAY\, newly delivered from the builders in Florida. After paying a visit to the Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne\, NJ\, to view Royal Caribbean’s Voyager-class ADVENTURE OF THE SEAS\, we continued up the Hudson (North) River\, arriving off the Manhattan Cruise Terminal as the MS ROTTERDAM was leaving her berth. The SEA DART II then escorted her to the Statue of Liberty where HAL’s flagship hove to and used her azipods and thrusters to rotate in place several times to provide passengers on both sides of the ship a view of the statue at sunset. As night fell\, we headed back to Staten Island as MS ROTTERDAM set course for the Verrazzano Narrows and the open ocean en route to Fort Lauderdale\, FL. \n(Photo: Stuart Gewirtzman)

SUMMARY:THE FIVE LIVES OF THE FOUR ACES***ENCORE SHOWING***Presented by Doug Newman
DESCRIPTION:Although they are among the better-known passenger-cargo liners\, American Export Lines’ postwar “Four Aces”—EXCALIBUR\, EXOCHORDA\, EXETER\, and EXCAMBION—are nevertheless often seen as adjuncts of the express liners INDEPENDENCE and CONSTITUTION rather than important in their own right. Yet these four ships are notable in several ways. Rebuilt from WWII U.S. Navy attack transports as passenger-cargo liners for AEL’s service from the U.S. to the Mediterranean and as far as the Middle East\, they are exemplars of the many vessels converted from wartime to peacetime use after the war\, as well as of a mid-20th century U.S. Merchant Marine that was heavily subsidized partly in anticipation of yet another world war. They are also among the very earliest postwar liners\, both having entered service in 1948\, and represent the brief trend toward smaller passenger-cargo liners in the immediate postwar years. Lastly\, they represented the height of postwar modernity\, both as single-class ships with private facilities in every stateroom and as the world’s first fully air-conditioned liners\, as well as in their modernist art and design. SUMMARY:NY HARBOR CRUISE TO THE U.S. MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY AND VISIT TO PORTSIDE NEW YORK
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 4th\, twenty PONY Branch members and friends embarked under sunny skies onboard the SEA DART II (an ex-U.S. Army Higgins 1953 T–Boat) for a trip up the East River to the American Merchant Marine Museum at Kings Point\, NY\, located on the grounds of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The museum is located on the North Shore of Long Island in an area formerly known as the “Gold Coast” because of the affluence of its residents at the turn of the 20th century. The museum officially opened as a permanent exhibition space in 1979 and is housed in “Elm Point\,” the mansion designed by Greville Rickard and built in 1929 for William Slocum Barstow\, an associate of Thomas Edison. Inside there are both permanent and temporary collections that trace and honor the history of the U.S. Merchant Marine\, the United States Merchant Marine Academy\, and the profession of seafaring. These include a 15–foot model of the United States Lines WASHINGTON\, a replica of the Hales Trophy (the original resided there until it was returned to Britain in 1990)\, a MacArthur “surrender sword”\, an extensive collection of shipboard service china\, and a new series of ship models that went on display in 2019. The museum as well as the campus of the United States Merchant Marine Academy is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also found on the campus and the National Register is Wiley Hall\, formerly known as “Forker House\,” once the summer home of Walter P. Chrysler. \nPrior to departing from Red Hook\, Brooklyn on the SEA DART II\, we visited the 1938–built coastal tanker MARY A. WHALEN. It is the current home of PortSide New York\, an organization with the goal to connect New Yorkers to the benefits of New York Harbor. \n(USMMA photo)

SUMMARY:THE CRUISE OF THE BOU EL MOGDADPresented by Tom Rinaldi
DESCRIPTION:In Senegal\, West Africa\, one of the world’s most interesting cruise vessels lies hidden in plain sight: built in 1950 to carry passengers\, freight and mail on overnight voyages up and down the Senegal River\, the BOU EL MOGDAD today makes weekly trips following more or less the same route she sailed 70 years ago. Based at the old colonial capital of Saint-Louis (now a UNESCO World Heritage City)\, the BOU winds her way upriver along Senegal’s border with Mauritania\, stopping at old colonial trading posts where she’s been a familiar sight for generations. Nearly scrapped when reliable highways opened parallel to the river in the 1970s\, the BOU instead became the subject of a quixotic and unlikely conversion to luxury cruise vessel. The conversion proved a hit\, and despite overwhelming odds the BOU is still sailing today\, now back in action following a period of uncertainty during the pandemic. At our first in-person membership meeting since February 2020\, PONY Branch member Tom Rinaldi will take us along for one of the BOU’s recent voyages on a trip through time well worth the wait. \nFor those unable to attend the meeting in-person\, Tom’s presentation will be live-streamed via Zoom. (A recording of the program will also be presented via Zoom at a later date.) \nIn accordance with New York City and National Opera Center protocols\, mask wearing will be optional for those attending this event in-person. \n(Photo courtesy of Tom Rinaldi)

SUMMARY:THE LINERS AND CRUISE SHIPS OF SCANDINAVIA***ENCORE SHOWING***Presented by Captain Albert Schoonderbeek
DESCRIPTION:Scandinavian Liners are the ships that sailed from Norway\, Sweden and Denmark. These small countries were traditionally seafaring nations\, and extensive fleets were built to connect their populations to the rest of the world. From the 1860’s onward\, Scandinavian liners sailed the world’s oceans and continued to do so until the decline of the transatlantic passenger ships in the early jet age. Many lingered on as cruise ships during the next few decades. The tremendous growth of the cruise industry in the 1960’s through the 1980’s was largely due to Scandinavian maritime enterprise. Norwegian-based companies Royal Caribbean International\, Norwegian Cruise Line\, Royal Viking Line and others led the way in the early years of the modern cruise business. Captain Albert Schoonderbeek\, current Fleet Master for Holland America Line\, will cover this entire period\, from the early Thingvalla Line to latest “Apartment of the Seas.” \nThis encore showing will be a recording of Capt. Albert Schoonderbeek’s informative program originally presented on April 1st. \n(Photo: Captain Albert Schoonderbeek collection)
